The Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRM&DS) is a training, research and development unit under the office of the vice chancellor. It was established in June 2009, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal University of Technology, Minna. The establishment of the Centre is part of the global efforts to reduce the risks of natural and man-induced disasters that are threatening the sustenance of development efforts. Since its establishment, the Centre has commenced training and research activities. The main focus of our activities is Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) as adopted by the Hyogo Framework for Action which set the guidelines for the reduction of vulnerability to hazards and emphasized the mainstreaming of DRR into everyday decision and development activities. The overall goal is to substantially reduce disaster related losses in human settlements across the globe.

Our vision is to become a reputable Centre of excellence in research and development in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction at the national, regional and international levels.
MISSION STATEMENT OF CDRM&DS
The mission is to train highly skilled personnel at the post-graduate level and to conduct result oriented researches on Disaster Risk Reduction with a view to building human capacity and the required data base for achieving a sustainable DRR in Nigeria.
In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal University of Technology, Minna and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), our mandate covers the following.
i. Provision of Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Science (M.Sc) professional programmes in Disaster Risk Studies and Development Studies
ii. Assisting NEMA in training and research in the areas of disaster risk management and development studies and other projects identifiable and of relevance to the objective of NEMA mandate.
iii. Establishment of baseline information for Disaster Risk Management and Development, including disaster and risk profiles, national policies, strategies, capacities, resources and programmes.
iv. Identifying trends, gaps, concerns and challenges and setting forth accepted priority areas in DRM & DS.
v. Assisting NEMA in the development of tools for; advocating the urgent need for development or adopting policies and legislations for DRR, benchmarking progress made in promotion of DRR and its mainstreaming
developing result-oriented work plans for NEMA to coordinate lessons learned and good practices, and sharing the findings at national, regional and international levels (through NEMA).
vi. Working with NEMA to development research and training programmes to cover the broad spectrum of activities in the DRM cycle especially meeting the capacity development needs of NEMA, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), MDAs and the general public to develop a culture of disaster resilience. In line with existing commitments under the HFA, the Centre will run approved curricula on DRM at the professional Certificate and postgraduate levels while liaising with relevant University units to initiate Bachelor’s degree programmes
vii. Working with international (Sub-regional, regional and global), partners to deliver research competencies in support of DRR in Nigeria.
