CDRM&DS signed MoU with Gravitazz Institute for Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, Johannesburg. Gravitazz is an international organization based in Johannesburg (South Africa) which aims, through its various activities, to support DRR, Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and emergency management strategies while strengthening humanitarian response in the African continent.
- The main objectives of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) are to provide a general framework for promoting collaboration between the two parties in Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Risk Management-programs.
- The collaboration will, in particular, have the following objectives:
- To promote new joint initiatives, through the identification of guiding principles, effective practices and institutional frameworks to help private entities and governments in developing appropriate laws, policies, initiatives and programmes to address environmental hazards and human-induced disasters.
- To jointly organizing scientific-technical conferences on risk reduction, disaster management and climate change adaptation on a regular basis in African and Training workshops to build capacity in DRR and DRM.
- To jointly carry out research activities.
- To support with expert knowledge/teaching capacity in curricula of masters studies on risk reduction, disaster management and climate change adaptation.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the Centre by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M.A Akanji.
The Centre has embarked on familiarization tour to Federal, State and relevant private organisations across the country. The essence of the tour is to introduce the new Director and to solidify old and new collaborations.
DRR QUIZ AND DEBATE COMPETITION
The third edition of inter School DRR quiz and debate competition jointly organized by the Centre for Disaster Risk Management, FUT Minna, Niger State Emergency Management Agency and National Emergency Management Agency (Minna Operation Office) took place on 13th December, 2016 at Abdulsalam Youth Center, Tunga, Minna. Federal Government College, Minna emerged winner in the quiz competition, while Government Secondary School, Bosso road, Minna top the debate aspect.
The Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, at its 120th meeting held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 approved the promotion of Dr. J.J Dukiya from the rank of Associate Professor to Professor with effect from October 1, 2015. We congratulate our new Director on his promotion and wish him long life and good health.
CDRMDS GOT NEW DIRECTOR
The Vice-Chancellor has approved the appointment of Dr. J. J. Dukiya, Department of Urban and Regional Planning as the Director Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies. Before his appointment, Dr Dukiya was the Head of Department of Transport Management Technology. Dr Dukiya is an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, he obtained Bachelor degree in Urban and Regional Planning in 1992, Master’s degree in Remote Sensing Technology in 1998 and Ph.D Remote Sensing Applications in 2009. He is a member of Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Nigerian Environmental Societies (NES), Dr Dukiya is a Registered Town Planners (RTP).
2016 Activities National and International Engagements
The Centre conducted the 2015/2016 field work excercise, the excercise took place at Gurara local government area of Niger State ( Lambata & Izom) between 13th and 14th May, 2016.
The Director of the Centre Professor A.M Jinadu accompanied by Dr. Samsideen Ojoye and Mr. Gbenga Morenikeji went on behalf of the University and the host Community to Gurku Interally Displaced Person's camp in Abuja on 1st February, 2016 to donate food and cloth items.

CDRMDS held 3rd & 4th Governing Board meeting on 30th June, and 26th October, 2015 at the University Council Chamber.
CDRM&DS in collaboration with Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy (DRLA) of Tulane University USA organized the second Regional Faculty Development Workshop (FDW2) and Disaster Resilient Leadership Course (DRL2) between 4th and 12th of February, 2015. The events were declared opened by the Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna at the SAFTEC Hotel, Broadcasting Road, Minna Niger State.
The Director of the Centre together with the Director of Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy, Tulane University – Dr. Ky Luu attended a meeting with USAID, OFDA and UNICEF in Senegal, Dakar on the 13th of July, 2015. The meeting was to seek support for the Disaster Resilience Leadership Programme in West Africa.
The last phase of the Stakeholders Forum for Master curriculum validation was held at Rock view Hotel, Abuja on the 25th of August, 2015. The forum drawn participants from Academic, and professionals from Oil and Gas.
The second edition of inter School DRR quiz competition organized by the Centre took place between 2nd and 9th June, 2015. At the preliminaries, twelve (12) schools contested in the competition out of which four (4) schools emerged to proceed to the finals. In these categories are, Police Secondary School Minna, Mariam Babangida Girls Science College, FEMA Group of Schools and Mypa Secondary School Minna. The grand finale of the competition was held on 15th October, 2015. Police Secondary School Minna emerged the winner of the quiz competition.
As a result of request to redeploy some Research Officers from the Centre, Mrs. Suleiman A. Khadijat (PF: 1631) has been redeployed to ITS Department of the University. Mr. Kuti Ibrahim Abayomi (PF: 1633) has changed cadre and was redeployed to Department of Agricultural Engineering as an Assistant Lecturer. Also, Mr Shuaibu Ahmed Mahi (PF: 1705) and Mr. Sani M. Babangida (PF: 2119) applied for withdrawal of their services from the University.
The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with NEMA commissioned the Federal University of Technology Minna, Seismological Station at Lunko Village, Gidan Kwano under the supervision of Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRM&DS). The commissioning was held on 18th May, 2015. In attendance were the DG NASRDA, DG NEMA, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. M.A. Akanji, Director CDRM&DS, Management and staff of the University.
The Centre attended two MoU review meetings at NEMA Headquarters in Abuja on the 6th August and 27th October, 2015 respectively.
The Centre won a consultancy contract worth six million, four hundred and eighty thousand naira (N6, 480,000.00) in October, 2014. The contract was awarded to the Centre to develop a National Disaster Risk Reduction Information and Communication System for National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The contract was later upgraded to seven million naira (N7, 000,000). The work has been completed and the report was forwarded to NEMA in October, 2015.

The Centre, in conjunction with Disaster Resilience leadership Academy, Tulane University, USA organized a workshop on Strengthening Leadership in Disaster Resilience (SLDR 1) between 4th and 12th of August, 2014 at SAFTEC hotel, Minna, the workshop was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. M.A. Akanji and the University Management team. The workshop had twenty six (26) participants drawn from across the West Africa.
The Centre has produced the 3rd edition of the CDRM&DS Bulletin which is currently in circulation.
The CDRM&DS held the third in house training on Arc GIS software for Research Officers. The exercise lasted for six weeks.
CDRMDS attended the 5th Regional Workshop on Africa Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction was held in Abuja between 13th and 16th May, 2014.
The Centre in collaboration with Tulane University, USA organized a workshop on Strengthening Leadership in Disaster Resilient Programme which was funded by Bill Gates and the World Bank. A one year programme has been signed by the Centre to conduct short training and faculty development workshop for disaster management practitioners. The Centre has received the first project fund installment.

CDRM&DS hosted West African Regional Workshop on Strengthening Disaster Resilience Leadership Programme (SDLRP) in July, 2013. The workshop was held in partneship with University of Health and Allied Sciences, Accra Ghana; Tulane University, USA, Makerere University, Uganda and Asian Preparedness Centre (ADPC), Bangkok, Thailand. It was sponsoerd by Bill And Melinda Gates Fundation and World Bank Global Facility for Disater Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR).
Mr Lekan Sanni attended National Stakeholders Consultative Workshop on the Post 2015 Hyogo Framework for Action in Nigeria on behalf of the Director of the Centre – Prof. A. M. Jinadu on 23rd April, 2013 at Ajuji hotel, Abuja. He also presented a paper titled “Identification Assessment and Monitoring Disaster Risk: The Nigerian Experience”.
The Director of Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Prof. A.M. Jinadu attended the 4th Global Platform in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) held in Geneva, Switzerland at the International Conference Centre from Sunday 19th May to Thursday 23rd May, 2013.
CDRM&DS Hosted a West African Regional Workshop on Strengthening of Leadership in Disaster Resilience Programme between 4th and 5th July, 2013 at Dogon Koli Hotel, Minna.
The Director of Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Prof. A.M. Jinadu attended a workshop on the 15th Edition of the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPDP) at the three training Centre in Nigeria between 24th April, 2013 and 20th June, 2013.
The Director attended the 2nd Faculty Development and Training Course on Disaster Resilience Leadership (DRL) in Ho,Volta Region and Accra Ghana between 21st and 29th February, 2013.
The Director also attended NEMA National consultative workshop on 2013 flood prevention, preparedness and Response between 26th and 27th March, 2013.
Dr. Ojoye Samsideen, Mr. Suleiman Abdullahi and Gbenga Morenikeji represented the Centre at the Wibner – Research Africa Platform training on the 2nd April, 2013.
The Director of Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Prof. A.M. Jinadu attended 2013 NYSC Corps Employers Workshop at the NYSC Zonal office, Chanchaga Local Government Secretariat on 28th May, 2013.
The Director of Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Prof. A.M. Jinadu was a committee member at the meeting with the UN, EU and NEMA DG on the PDNA held in NEMA on 12th June, 2013.
CDRM&DS Visited NYSC camp and gave disaster education to Corp members during the orientation exercise held in Paiko, Niger State on the 11th July, 2013.
CDRM&DS led by the Director, Prof. A. M. Jinadu, paid a visit to the NYSC Disaster Risk Reduction Volunteers/ NEMA Vanguard on the 13th March, 2013 at the State NYSC secretariat, Minna.
CDRM &DS visited the NYSC Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger State on the 14th March, 2013 where the Director delivered a lecture to the Corp members on basic concepts and approaches to disaster risk management
2012 Activities National and International Engagements
On the 10th – 11th February 2012, the Centre embarked on field trip to Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State where the Students carried out Flood Disaster Impact and Vulnerability Assessment in the Down Stream Communities of Shiroro Dam.
On the 21st February 2012, the Director of the Centre, Prof. A. M. Jinadu represented the University as a consultant in the Good Governance Project for National Dialogue on Consolidated Report of Good Urban Governance (GUG) in Nigeria at Bolingo Hotel and Towers, Abuja.
On the 6th March 2012, Centre organized the first Academic Board meeting held at the office of Director, Gidan Kwano Campus.
The Director of the Centre attended a collaborative workshop on peace building and conflict management for sustainable development in Nigeria organized by (NEMA) and Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Ta’al Hotel, Lafia, Nasarawa State between 22nd and 23rd March, 2012.
Second in-house training was conducted for Staff of the CDRMØ&DS and Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NISEMA) on the use of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Time and task management for work place efficiency on the 9th May, 2012.
The Director of the Centre, Prof. A. M. Jinadu attended a UNDP Workshop on Strengthening Local Government and Decentralization Programme in Nigeria at the Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt between 26th and 27th June, 2012.
The Director represented the Center at the Understanding Risk Forum which took place in Cape Town, South Africa between 2nd and 6th July, 2012.
The Director attended a workshop on Leadership in Disaster Resilience Programme in Accra Ghana between 8th and 9th of August, 2012. He presented the Center’s professional master and PGD programmes to participants from Tulane University, USA, Ghana, Djibouti, Haiti, and Uganda.
The VC and the Director CDRM&DS attended the 4th International Conference on Disaster Risk (IDRC 2012) in Davos, Switzerland between 26th and 31st August, 2012.
CDRM&DS organized the Governing Board meeting on the 11th of October, 2012. The meeting was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. S. Audu. Action plan 2010-2014 for the Centre was presented and all the plans stated were well articulated.
The Director attended a 3-day training organized by NEMA in collaboration with the World Bank in Abuja between 5th and 7th November, 2012
The University team was led by the Director of the Centre Professor A.M Jinadu and accompanied by Dr. Samsideen Ojoye and Mr. Gbenga Morenikeji who took off from Minna on 1st February, 2016 in Centre’s bus fully loaded with donated materials.
Fut Minna team arrived NEMA Operation Office Abuja by 10.30am to meet NEMA Operation Office team led by Mr. Ishaya Chonoko, both team left for Gurku camp by 11.00am.
